Horst P. Horst

German, 1906 - 1999

Counted among the most influential photographers of the 20th century, Horst P. Horst is best known for his elegant and stylish fashion photographs, which often appeared in the pages of Vogue. In addition to revolutionizing modern photography with his elaborately staged sets, dramatic lighting and striking compositions, Horst played a monumental role in helping to bring European sophistication and glamour to the American public. Born in Germany in 1906, Horst studied in Hamburg in late 1920s and later moved to Paris, where he studied under the iconic Modernist architect Le Corbusier. Horst became close with Vogue photographer Baron George Hoyningen-Huene, who ultimately influenced Horst to move away from architecture and towards photography. During the course of his lengthy career, Horst captured such luminaries as Elsa Schiaparelli, Bette Davis, Lisa Fonssagrives, Cole Porter and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Horst died in 1999 at the age of 93.
