Karen & Ebbe Clemmensen
Danish
Karen and Ebbe Clemmensen were a Danish husband and wife design duo who worked together from the 1950s to the 1970s. They were known for their innovative approach to furniture design, which often incorporated new materials and techniques.
Ebbe Clemmensen (1925-1996) trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Karen Clemmensen (1929-2001) studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. The couple met while working at a design firm in the 1950s, and later started their own design studio.
The Clemmensens' designs were characterized by their simplicity, functionality, and use of new materials such as fiberglass and plastic. They designed a wide range of furniture, including chairs, tables, and lamps, many of which are still produced today. Their designs were often playful and experimental, and they were known for their ability to incorporate new technologies and materials into their work.
The Clemmensens' contributions to Danish design have made them an important part of the Scandinavian design movement, and their designs continue to be celebrated and sought after today.
