Kawase Hasui

Japanese, 1883 - 1957
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was one of the most celebrated masters of 20th-century Japanese woodblock printing and a leading figure of the *shin-hanga* (“new prints”) movement. Renowned for his serene landscapes, Hasui captured the quiet beauty of Japan’s towns, temples, and countryside with subtle color gradations, atmospheric light, and a deep sense of place. His works blend traditional ukiyo-e techniques with a modern, almost poetic realism. In recognition of his artistic importance, the Japanese government designated Hasui a Living National Treasure in 1956. His prints remain highly sought after for their elegance, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal.
