Kyong Lee is a distinguished Korean abstract artist whose innovative work bridges the gap between physical and emotional experiences. Through a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes color, material, and form, she creates pieces that invite viewers to explore complex emotional landscapes. Based in Seoul, Lee’s artistic journey reflects a deep engagement with her surroundings.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Hong-ik University in Seoul in 1991 and went on to complete her Master’s degree at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig, Germany, in 2000. From 2001 to 2002, she was an Artist in Residence at the renowned SSamzieSpace Studio Residence Program in Seoul.
Lee’s commitment to precision is evident in her meticulous artistic process. She carefully plans her color palettes, dedicating specific time frames for mixing each hue. Her gradated color paintings are built up through a layering technique involving strips of tape, where each layer of paint is applied and allowed to rest for defined periods. This methodical approach emphasizes the relationships between colors and moments in time. Some of her works incorporate text, where she first embosses selected words into the surface before applying a monochromatic hue that resonates with the chosen term. For Lee, the process is not just technical; it is a poetic exploration essential to the work's meaning.
In her creations, Lee responds to her emotional experiences within her physical environment, using color as her primary visual language. For her, color transcends mere aesthetics; it embodies emotional states and serves as a conduit for expressing feelings and thoughts. She draws inspiration from the passage of time and the layering of experiences, reflecting on how memory evolves as time accumulates. Lee also delves into concepts of automatism, connecting specific words with corresponding colors in her "Color as Adjective" series. Additionally, she contemplates the tilt of the Earth, pondering its relationship to our emotional perceptions and the way we view our experiences.
Her work is included in several esteemed public collections, such as the Seoul Museum of Art, the Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art’s Art Bank in Seoul. Lee has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions across Korea and Germany, with her recent solo show, "Color as Adjective III," at Gallery Choi in Seoul.
