Leoncillo Leonardi
Italian, 1915 - 1968
Leoncillo Leonardi (1915-1968) was an Italian sculptor and ceramicist who was associated with the Italian post-war avant-garde movement. He was born in Spoleto, Italy, and began his career as a painter, but he later turned to sculpture and ceramics in the 1940s.
Leonardi's work was characterized by a strong sense of materiality and an interest in the relationship between form and surface texture. He was known for his use of ceramics as a sculptural medium, and he created a range of abstract and figurative forms using clay, stoneware, and other materials.
One of Leonardi's most famous works is his series of "terracotta heads," which he began creating in the 1950s. These works are characterized by their rough, textured surfaces and their abstracted forms, which suggest the human head without explicitly representing it.
Leonardi's work was highly influential in the development of Italian ceramics and sculpture in the post-war period, and his work continues to be exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide.
