Phillip Lloyd Powell
American, 1919 - 2008
Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1919, Phillip Lloyd Powell discovered furniture early in his life was designing custom pieces by the time he reached high school. He studied engineering at Drexel University and was later drafted to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his return to the United States, Powell purchased a parcel of land in New Hope, Pennsylvania—a well-known artist’s haven populated by such craftspeople as Paul Evans, Wharton Esherick, and George Nakashima. Powell began designing his own furniture in the early 1950s and established a showroom in downtown New Hope in 1953. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Powell shared a studio with Evans and the duo often collaborated on designs. Best known for his cabinets and tables, Powell’s furniture transcends the Modernist vernacular with its sculptural, sinuous forms and use of unique materials, including found objects, stone, and metal. Powell passed away in 2008 at the age of 88.
