Richard Barr

American
Richard G. Barr (1930–2003) was an influential American industrial designer and sculptor, best known for his groundbreaking lighting creations. A Carnegie Mellon–trained industrial designer and Korean War veteran, Barr began his career designing TV cabinets at Westinghouse and later led the Industrial Design Division at J. Gordon Perlmutter & Associates in New Jersey. In the mid-1960s, he launched a prolific collaboration with Laurel Lamp Company—creating the iconic “Studio Collection” and the renowned “ac’cent” mushroom lamps that helped define Laurel’s signature aesthetic.

Over the next decade, Barr continued to reshape mid-century modern lighting with sculptural, Brutalist-inspired designs, crafting pieces for Thomasville, Ethan Allen, Hager Lamp, and others. His lamps—featuring architectural forms in chrome, brass, steel, and wood—have since become collector favorites, noted for their bold artistry and technical mastery. Today, vintage Richard Barr lamps are featured in galleries and auctions, celebrated as standout examples of 1960s and ’70s design.
