Richard Estes
American, 1932
Richard Estes (born 1932 in Kewanee, Illinois) is an American painter celebrated as one of the foremost figures in the Photorealist movement. Known for his painstakingly detailed urban scenes, Estes captures reflective surfaces, glass storefronts, and city architecture with striking clarity. His works often eliminate human presence to focus on light, reflection, and the visual complexity of modern city life.
After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Estes worked as a commercial illustrator before turning fully to fine art in the 1960s. His art has been widely exhibited in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Estes continues to live and work between New York and Maine.
