Robert Sonneman is an American lighting designer and entrepreneur who has been a prominent figure in the lighting industry for over five decades. He was born in 1942 in New York City and grew up in Long Island.
 
Sonneman studied architecture and industrial design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he developed an interest in lighting design. After graduating in 1964, he worked for several lighting companies before founding his own, Robert Sonneman Associates, in 1967.
 
Throughout his career, Sonneman has been known for his innovative and elegant lighting designs that blend form and function. He has collaborated with many leading architects and designers, and his work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications.
 
In 2003, Sonneman founded his eponymous company, Sonneman Lighting, which offers a wide range of contemporary lighting solutions for residential, commercial, and hospitality settings. Today, Sonneman Lighting is recognized as one of the leading design companies in the industry, and Sonneman himself is regarded as one of the most influential lighting designers of his generation.
 
Sonneman has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the 2007 National Design Award for Product Design from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. He continues to innovate and inspire with his designs, which are celebrated for their timeless beauty, innovative use of materials, and sophisticated style.
