Stuart Dunkel

American, 1952
Stuart Dunkel, a talented artist and accomplished musician, hails from Fairlawn, New Jersey, where his fascination with art emerged during his early years. Though an art education class at age five initially discouraged him, music soon captured his heart, leading him to excel as a classical musician, particularly with the oboe.

Throughout his academic years, music remained the primary focus, and Dunkel's dedication paid off when he landed opportunities to perform with prestigious orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His musical journey expanded as he ventured to Hong Kong and Florida Gulf Coast Symphony before pursuing advanced degrees at the Mannes College of Music and Juilliard School of Music.

While music flourished in Dunkel's life, his love for painting persisted. In 1994, he decided to delve deeper into the visual arts, attending classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Dunkel's artistic expression evolved, and his signature creation, the small mouse, became a central motif in his captivating paintings, exuding both emotional depth and humor.

Dunkel's works delve into abstract harmonies and formal compositions, unveiling intricate patterns and shapes upon closer inspection. In the early 2000s, he dedicated himself to refining his artistic skills, earning recognition in esteemed art competitions and authoring a book titled "An Artist's Life: Insights into the Paintings of Stuart Dunkel."

Guided by the classical realist tradition, Dunkel continued his pursuit of artistic excellence, collaborating with influential teachers like Joel Carson Jones. In 2011, he showcased his paintings at the Anthony Waichulis Invitational, solidifying his standing in the realist art world.

Currently, Stuart Dunkel serves as the director of the Nautilus School of Realist Art in Watertown, Massachusetts, where he shares his passion and expertise with a dedicated group of students. His dedication to both music and art has transformed his life's journey, and he aims to continue evolving and improving as an artist in the years to come.
