Castelli / Anonima Castelli
Italian
Castelli was established in 1877 in Bologna as a small cabinetmaker’s workshop by Ettore Castelli and evolved into a global leader in Italian office furniture design. In 1939, the company was formally incorporated as Anonima Castelli, marking its transition from traditional woodworking to industrial-scale modern design production. After World War II, the company embraced contemporary design, collaborating with visionary figures like Giancarlo Piretti, Emilio Ambasz, Richard Sapper, and F.A. Porsche to develop iconic products that continue to influence global design culture.
Among its most celebrated creations is the lightweight, folding Plia chair (1967) by Piretti—crafted from transparent plastic and steel—a symbol of democratic design and featured in MoMA’s Radical Furniture exhibition. Other standout designs include the ergonomic Vertebra seating system and the “Dalle Nove alle Cinque” desk series. Castelli earned prestigious accolades such as the Compasso d’Oro for several of its products.
Despite insolvency in 2013, the brand was revived in 2015 under new ownership (Castelli 2014 Srl) and continues to handcraft and reissue classic collections from its catalog of iconic designs. Today, Castelli—still recognized as Anonima Castelli—remains synonymous with Made in Italy innovation, elegant form, and office furniture that melds aesthetic flair with functional excellence.
