Dillingham

American
Dillingham Manufacturing Company was an American furniture maker celebrated for its innovative and finely crafted Mid-Century Modern designs. Founded in 1881 by William H. Dillingham in Shelburne, Vermont, the company began as a sawmill before evolving into a leading producer of modern furniture. During the mid-20th century, Dillingham gained national recognition for its sleek, durable designs and collaborations with prominent designers including Merton Gershun, Arthur Umanoff, and Pierre Cardin. Gershun’s “Esprit” collection and Umanoff’s modernist credenzas exemplified the brand’s refined craftsmanship and use of rich materials like walnut, teak, and burl wood. Despite its success, the company closed in 1988 amid rising overseas competition. Today, Dillingham’s furniture remains highly sought after by collectors for its timeless aesthetic, superior construction, and enduring representation of American Mid-Century Modern design.
