Description
POTTER, Beatrix.
The Pie and the Patty-Pan.
Stock Code 109463
London, Frederick Warne and Co., 1905
Current price£575.00
A very good first edition, in larger format than the usual Beatrix Potter titles (this was changed in 1930, when it was reissued to The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pen in the standard format). 'The year 1905 appears on the front of the title-page of the first printing. The early printings have plain mottled lavender end-papers, which were shortly replaced by an end-paper design featuring a pie and a patty-pan. The cover picture was then changed from a cat in a small circle, to one of Ribby sitting by the fire, in a large circle' (Linder).
The book is also responsible for inspiring one of the rarest Beswick figurines, 'Duchess with flowers'.
First edition, first printing (with '1905' on the title-page and with a kitten in the pictorial label on the front cover); small 4to (178 x 138 mm); colour frontispiece and 9 colour plates (included in pagination), 21 vignettes in black and white, a few minor spots or finger-marks to 4 or 6 pages, gutter split at pp 29 and 41 but firm; publisher's blue-grey boards with mounted colour illustration on upper cover, lettered and panelled in white, mottled lavender endpapers, contemporary ownership to upper pastedown and minor abrasion to upper free endpaper, spine faded and slightly bumped at the ends, lower outside corner of upper board rubbed, otherwise a very good, unrestored copy. -
