"G. Argy-Rousseau: With a Catalogue Raisonné of the Pâtes de Verre

$ 550
  • Description
    The definitive monograph on Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, one of the great masters of French pâte-de-verre glass and a defining figure of the Art Deco movement, written by Janine Bloch-Dermant, an internationally recognized authority on French glass history since 1860. This richly illustrated volume traces Argy-Rousseau's full career — his early Art Nouveau training, his evolution toward the bold, sculptural geometric forms that would define Art Deco glassware, his commercial partnership with the Société des Pâtes de Verre d'Argy-Rousseau, and the difficulties he faced during the Depression years that eventually curtailed pâte-de-verre production in favor of gold, platinum, and enamel work.

    The book features extensive full-color plate sections illustrating Argy-Rousseau's celebrated vases, lamps, and figural pieces — including the "Libations" vase, tiger-motif night-lights, and figural lamps such as the kneeling Dancer — alongside reproductions of the artist's original working sketches and period advertisements from Art et Décoration documenting the firm's exhibitions at the Salon d'Automne and Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. The heart of the volume is a comprehensive catalogue raisonné compiled by Yves Delaborde, organized chronologically by year of production and illustrated with period and contemporary photographs of individual pieces (vases, bowls, boxes, pendants, night-lights, and lamps), each with dimensions and, where known, collection or auction-house references — making this the essential tool for authentication, dating, and valuation of Argy-Rousseau glass.

    Contents: Full biographical and stylistic study of Argy-Rousseau's career; original design sketches; period advertisements and Salon documentation; catalogue raisonné of the pâte-de-verre oeuvre organized by year; extensive color and black-and-white plates; bibliography.

    Reference value: The standard scholarly reference and catalogue raisonné for Gabriel Argy-Rousseau; essential for authentication and provenance research on his pâte-de-verre glass.
