George Moir Bussey's History of Napoleon with illustrations after the noted French battle-scene painter Horace Vernet (1789-1863). Bussey was keen to stress the impartiality of his account, which he considered free from the 'feelings excited by passing occurrences' that had biased earlier histories of the French emperor.

First edition; 2 volumes; 8vo (25 x 17 cm, 10 x 6.75 in); ownership inscription in pen to front free endpaper verso of vol. I, numerous illustrations including an engraved frontispiece by Horace Vernet, woodcut initials and various textual ornaments throughout, foxing to frontis and occasionally thereafter; contemporary mottled calf, cover gilt ruled with dentelles in blind, gilt spine in raised banded compartments, contrasting title-pieces in morocco, marbled edges, extremities with very minor areas of fraying; lxxii, 576; vi, 634pp.
