Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a military and political leader of France, and one of the most influential figures in European history. He rose to power during the French Revolution and became Emperor of France in 1804. He is best known for his military tactics and his successful campaigns in Italy, Egypt, and Austria. He also instituted a number of revolutionary reforms, including the Napoleonic Code and the Concordat of 1801. He was eventually defeated in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo. He died in exile on the island of Saint Helena in 1821.
