Description
A comprehensive monograph on Samuel Abraham Marx (1885–1964), the Chicago-based architect, furniture designer, and art collector whose refined, understated take on modernism shaped some of the twentieth century's most sophisticated interiors. Written by noted Marx expert and decorative arts dealer Liz O'Brien, this 216-page volume is the first full study of Marx's career, tracing his work across residential commissions, private clubs, and commercial architecture — including the Tavern Club in Chicago and the landmark May Company department store (now LACMA West) in Los Angeles.
Illustrated with more than 200 photographs (color and black-and-white), the book documents Marx's furniture designs alongside his celebrated eye for placing museum-quality art — by Modigliani, Picasso, Matisse, Miró, and Noguchi among others — within elegant, livable interiors. The text also explores his design vocabulary: Macassar ebony and malachite finishes, Lucite detailing, waterfall forms, and his hallmark square-cutout chair backs, offering essential context and visual reference for collectors and dealers of French and American Art Deco and Moderne furnishings.
Hardcover with dust jacket, cloth binding, 12" x 11.5", 216 pages, published by Pointed Leaf Press.
