Art Deco Wrought Iron Mantel Clock by Travail Francais, France, 1925

A sculptural and richly worked example of French Art Deco metalcraft, this mantle clock is constructed entirely of hand-forged wrought iron, its arched, bell-shaped silhouette built up from a dense composition of stylized Art Deco flowers, curling tendrils, and scrolling volutes. The piece is signed by the maker L. Servaud, Ferronnier of Limoges, and reflects the hand-hammered, textural approach to ironwork that defined the finest French decorative metalwork of the 1920s, in the broader tradition of masters such as Edgar Brandt following the landmark 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

At the crown of the piece, a cluster of hammered iron flowerheads and ribbed banding frames the circular clock face, which is set in a brass surround with a hobnail-textured bezel. The face itself is finished in a warm brass tone with black Arabic numerals and a radiating guilloché center, fitted with its original spade-form hands. Below the dial, an openwork panel of scrolling iron forms a stylized rose motif, flanked by cascading ribbon-like fronds terminating in tight iron spirals. The clock is raised on a solid, gently curved wrought iron base with a hand-textured finish throughout, giving the entire piece a robust, sculptural presence. The reverse opens on a hinged brass-rimmed door to reveal the original clockwork movement.
