Description
Antique Parisian mantel clock and candelabra set by Denière et Fils
French, 19th Century
Clock: Height 60cm, width 36cm, depth 19cm
Candelabra: Height 60cm, diameter 30cm
This beautiful clock set is crafted from ormolu and a later malachite veneer, designed in the elegant Neoclassical style by 19th Century producer Denière et Fils. It consists of a central mantel clock and pair of candelabra.
The central mantel clock is supported by a malachite rectangular stepped base, raised on toupie feet and decorated with Neoclassical style ormolu mounts. These take the shape of laurel leaf garlands and a decorative curtain. The clock case itself is a wonderful example of sculptural bronzemaking. Crafted from simple white enamel, the circular dial sits centrally, surrounded by ornate ormolu designs and inset onto a column shape at the back. With scrolled forms at the bottom, the case is decorated with floral garlands, fruit, cloth, ribbons, and a laurel leaf crown finial. The dial is painted with Arabic numerals for the hour indices and coloured floral garlands underneath.
The pair of flanking candelabra are conformingly styled, with a square profile stepped malachite base raised on ormolu toupie feet. Each body is of vase form, with a waisted ormolu socle and draped fabric ormolu mounts. From the top of the bodies, each candelabrum issues seven scrolled light branches, decorated with foliate details and each terminating in a candleholder with drip pan.
The clock dial is signed 'Denière / Ft De Bronzes / A Paris' for the leading manufacturer of decorative bronzes, Denière et Fils. Founded in 1804, the Parisian firm was most popular under the reign of Napoleon III, who awarded the firm the prestigious honour of ‘Fornisseurs de Roi’ (King's Supplier). This present piece is a fine example of their manufactory, which was sought after by important patrons from around the globe.
