Description
An exceptional French Napoleon III gilt bronze figural mantel clock, dating to the early 19th century, showcasing the elegance, artistry, and masterful craftsmanship that made French decorative arts of this period highly sought after. Richly detailed and beautifully cast, this impressive clock serves as both a functional timepiece and a remarkable work of sculpture.
The case is surmounted by a finely modeled gilt bronze figure of an artist holding a sketch pad, capturing a moment of artistic inspiration with extraordinary realism and expression. Every detail, from the flowing garments to the sculptural modeling of the figure, demonstrates the exceptional quality of French bronze casting during the period. The figure is set above a classic porcelain dial with Roman numerals, providing an elegant contrast to the warm gilded bronze.
The clock houses a French ébauche eight-day brass spring-driven time and strike movement with its original silk thread suspension, a hallmark of fine French clockmaking. The combination of mechanical precision and decorative artistry makes this piece equally desirable to collectors of antique clocks and fine French decorative arts.
Measuring an impressive 22 inches high, 18 inches wide, and 8 inches deep, this substantial mantel clock is perfectly scaled for display on a mantel, console, library cabinet, sideboard, or desk. Its refined proportions and timeless design allow it to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors, making it a striking focal point and an exceptional conversation piece.
The clock is in good antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. The original gilt bronze finish retains a beautiful warm patina, highlighting the exquisite sculptural details and remarkable craftsmanship. Elegant, versatile, and beautifully executed, this French Napoleon III figural mantel clock is a wonderful example of the early 19th-century French artistry and would make an outstanding addition to any distinguished collection of antique clocks or decorative objects. -
