Description
An elegant Antique French black marble and hand-painted clock garniture set, retailed by Palmer Bachelder & Co. of Boston during the late 19th century. This impressive three-piece ensemble beautifully combines fine French craftsmanship with the distinguished reputation of one of Boston's premier luxury retailers, making it a wonderful addition to any collection of antique clocks or decorative arts.
Crafted from richly polished black marble, the garniture set is embellished with finely painted panels depicting figures in period attire set within idyllic landscapes, inspired by classical European scenes. Delicate brass spindles and decorative porcelain accents further enhance the architectural design, creating a refined balance between the dark marble, vibrant hand-painted decoration, and warm gilt brass details. The elegant composition reflects the sophisticated decorative taste of the late Victorian era.
The central clock houses a high-quality French ébauche eight-day spring-driven time and strike movement and retains its original porcelain dial marked "Palmer Bachelder & Co., Boston." As was customary during the period, prestigious American retailers such as Palmer Bachelder & Co. imported the finest French clock movements and decorative cases, offering their clientele exceptional quality and craftsmanship.
The clock measures 17.5 inches wide, 16 inches high, and 6 inches deep, while each accompanying garniture urn measures approximately 10.75 inches high, 4 inches wide, and 4.25 inches deep. Together, the three pieces create a beautifully balanced display, ideal for a mantel, console, library, or formal living room. Their classic design allows them to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors while serving as an elegant focal point and conversation piece.
The garniture set is in good antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. One of the clock's feet has been professionally repaired, but the repair is stable and does not detract from the overall beauty or functionality of the set. Beautifully preserved and displaying exceptional craftsmanship throughout, this rare Palmer Bachelder & Co. garniture set is a superb example of late 19th-century French decorative arts and an outstanding collector's piece. -
