Description
An exceptional Antique French gilt bronze and enamel porcelain urn-form clock, dating to the early to mid-19th century. Beautifully executed, this remarkable timepiece exemplifies the elegance and artistry of French decorative arts, combining refined porcelain decoration with masterfully cast gilt bronze mounts to create an impressive sculptural work of art.
Designed in the form of a classical covered urn, the case is adorned with a delicate light turquoise-blue enamel ground richly highlighted with intricate gilt decoration. The elegant body is enhanced by two sculptural sphinx-form side handles, symbolizing strength and mystery, while a finely cast mascaron decorates the neck of the urn. The domed cover is crowned with an elaborate gilt bronze finial, and the entire composition rests upon a beautifully formed circular base, giving the clock a graceful and commanding presence.
The porcelain dial is signed "Montvenoux," while the clock houses a high-quality French ébauche eight-day brass spring-driven time and strike movement bearing the trademark of the renowned maker F. Marti. Highly respected for the quality and reliability of their movements, F. Marti clocks remain desirable among collectors of fine French timepieces.
Measuring an impressive 24.5 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 8 inches deep, this substantial urn-form clock is perfectly suited for display on a mantel, console, library cabinet, or center table, where its elegant proportions and exquisite craftsmanship make it an immediate focal point. The harmonious combination of vibrant porcelain, brilliant gilt bronze, and classical design allows it to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors while serving as a remarkable conversation piece.
The clock is in good antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. The gilt bronze retains a beautiful warm patina, while the enamel decoration remains vibrant and richly detailed. Elegant, rare, and exceptionally well crafted, this magnificent French urn-form clock is an outstanding collector's piece and a wonderful example of 19th-century French horology and decorative artistry. -
