Description
Sèvres style gilt bronze and porcelain mantel clock
French, Late 19th Century
Height 50cm, width 30cm, depth 13cm
This Sèvres style clock is an elegant piece of late 19th Century design, which will make a wonderful addition to a mantelpiece. It has been beautifully cast in bronze and gilded (ormolu), and set with intricately-painted porcelain panels.
The arched-top clock is surmounted by a beautiful oval-shaped porcelain panel depicting a young lady in 18th Century dress, with flowers in her powdered hair. This panel is displayed within a gilt bronze frame, which is draped with sculptural gilt bronze flower garlands.
Below, a circular white enamel dial – inscribed with Roman Numerals and Arabic Numbers – is centrally positioned on the clock case. Around it, the gilt bronze case has been masterfully cast with intricate, classically-inspired motifs and foliage. The porcelain panels which decorate the case include two paintings of powdered-haired young ladies, a depiction of a cherub in flight, and several images of colourful flower swags, set against white grounds, within parcel gilt navy borders. The clock’s oval shaped base is set on gilt bronze toupie feet.
