Bergmann Bronze Mermaid Presentation Box signed NamGreb

Price Upon Request
  • Description
A beautiful and most unusual Art Nouveau cold painted polychromed bronze box with exceptional motifs of Sea Creatures with a Mermaid perched on top. It was called the Freedom Box and was given as a presentation gift in Portsmouth, England around the 1920s. The hinged lid opens to reveal a cedar-lined interior, suggesting it might have been a cigarette box. Beautiful patina throughout, the condiiton is near mint. Franz Xaver Bergmann often signed NAM GREB to pieces he personally executed for his foundry which he inherited from his father around the turn of the century. It is said he often signed certain erotic or commissioned pieces in this cryptic manner.
