Pair of Chinese Clobbered Wall Pockets, Circa 1780

$ 4,900
  • Description
    Very finely decorated and colorful pair of Chinese wall pockets with flat backs, the body depicting a figure with a servant and a horse in the background amid flowers and mountains.

    During the 18th & early 19th centuries, often blue and white Chinese export was sent to Holland and England to be “clobbered” or enameled with color to enhance their decorative appeal. Colorful Imari porcelain was very popular at that time and was much more expensive than Chinese blue and white ware. It took clever European potters to see the advantage of adding color or clobbering to the porcelain. It is an overglaze process which is refired to make the color permanent.
