French 19th Century Green-Glaze Confit Pot

This green-glazed confit pot is French and dates to around 1840. Such vessels were once a kitchen staple in rural France, used to store confit, or meat cooked and preserved in its own fat, and their sturdy earthenware bodies were glazed only where the glaze was needed. Here the green glaze covers the upper portion and runs downward, meeting the unglazed lower body in the characteristic manner of the type. The rounded profile and broad opening follow the practical requirements of the original use. Today these pots are sought for their honest, utilitarian quality and the soft variation of their glazes.
