Large vernacular stone basin dating to the 19th century, originating from Liguria in the hills above Genoa, Italy. Worked from a substantial block of stone, the basin has a broad, irregular form with thick walls surrounding a deeply hollowed interior. The restrained construction and uneven contours retain the direct character of traditional utilitarian stonework, with traces of working and prolonged use still visible throughout.

The surface has developed considerable character through age and exposure, ranging from pale grey and earthy brown tones to areas of lichen and naturally occurring moss. Weathering, erosion and irregularities have softened the original contours of the stone over time, particularly around the upper edge and exterior. Its precise historical function is unknown and has therefore not been specified.
