Description
The ‘Sharks’ light was developed in 2017 by Vladimir Slavov of DIM Atelier in collaboration with architect Dieter Vander Velpen. Conceived at the intersection of lighting, sculpture and functional art, its elongated cast-brass body is defined by an irregular, highly tactile surface. Light moves differently across each facet and indentation, continually altering the object’s appearance according to viewpoint and illumination. Variations created through casting and finishing give every Shark its own texture, coloration and patina, making individuality an inherent part of the work.
These examples originate directly from the original ‘Sharks’ installation at The Jane in Antwerp, where fourteen individual lights were suspended together high within the former military hospital chapel. Positioned at different angles beneath the chapel’s vaulted structure, the elongated forms created a suspended constellation of light and metal. Viewed collectively, they functioned as a large-scale sculptural installation; individually, each Shark remained an autonomous piece of functional art. The project brings together Slavov’s material approach to metal and light with Vander Velpen’s architectural intervention within the historic interior.
Goldwood currently holds eight original examples from The Jane installation, offered individually. All eight lights share the same dimensions, while differences in patina, surface finish and suspension configuration make each example unique. We have 7 straight and 1 angled suspension versions available, priced individually.
The photographs shown represent a selection of the available lights. As patina, surface character and suspension configuration vary between individual examples, additional photographs and details of each specific light are available upon request. Please reach out for further information or to select a particular example.
