Matched Pair of Composite Stone Dogs with Fruit Baskets, England Mid 20th C.

$ 3,400
  • Description
    A matched pair of English mid-20th-century composite stone dogs sit upright on square bases, each holding a molded fruit basket in raised paws, the baskets detailed with rounded forms suggesting grapes or berries bound with a twisted rope handle. Dogs bearing baskets or shields appeared in European heraldic and decorative traditions from the medieval period onward, serving as loyal supporters in coats of arms and later as garden ornaments on estate grounds. The motif carried associations with fidelity, abundance, and domestic order, all qualities that made it well-suited to entrance ways and gardens. Sold as a pair. 8"w x 14.5"d x 24"h
