Description
Very large Italian patinated bronze and carved wood sculptural jardinières
Italian, c. 1874
Jardinières: Height 93cm, diameter 75cm
Base: Height 87cm, diameter 62cm
Overall: Height 180cm, diameter 75cm
This exceptional pair of antique jardinières, masterfully cast in patinated bronze, is presented on intricately hand-carved wooden pedestals, each adorned with symbolic and decorative motifs.
Both pieces are of a very similar design. At the heart of the composition, three finely sculpted cherubs bear the weight of the campagna-style jardinières. The upper rim is embellished with a refined bead-and-reel pattern, while the lower section features a gadrooned design. Two cherubs stand on either side, their hands grasping the base, while the third crouches beneath, lifting an arm in support. The figures are positioned on a textured rocky base scattered with branches, with water cascading from a toppled vessel. The casting is of outstanding quality, highlighting intricate details such as the cherubs’ expressive features and the realistic textures of the natural elements.
Resting on grand, ornately carved wooden pedestals, these jardinières are further elevated in elegance. The pedestals feature an upper frieze adorned with delicately carved rosettes, followed by a bead-and-reel moulding. Below, an elaborately carved frieze inspired by nature adds depth. The central section showcases a gracefully draped ribbon-tied laurel garland across the front and back, with a coat of arms carved on the front panel and a cartouche bearing the initials ‘MAS’ on one and ‘MIS’ on the other. The circular bases maintain a clean, refined look, accented by elegant banding.
One pedestal bears the inscription ‘M. Wilson. Dis / L. Miniati. Fece / Firenze 1874’.
With their impressive scale and masterful design, this remarkable pair of sculptural jardinières is a distinguished addition to both interior and exterior spaces. -
