Description
Large German early 20th century silver nef by Berthold Müller
German, Early 20th Century
Height 89cm, width 80cm, depth 40cm
Weight 10604g
This stunning sterling silver nef, dating back to the early 20th century, is a testament to expert craftsmanship and intricate detailing.
Its body showcases remarkable high-relief ornamentation, including an impressive representation of wooden planks, reminiscent of those traditionally used in shipbuilding. At its core, a striking cartouche displays an intricately crafted aquatic scene, crowned by a grotesque mask and flanked by finely detailed lion heads. Gunports and chains are encased within elaborate scrolling patterns, while a gracefully sculpted dolphin figure serves as the rudder.
Above deck, a host of finely detailed silver sailors are depicted diligently at work, bringing the piece to life. Each level of the ship is adorned with elaborate embellishments, from delicate foliate garlands to intricate scrolls and detailed lanterns. At the highest point, a sailor peers through a telescope. The silver sails are expertly formed, their dynamic contours giving the illusion of movement, as though caught in a passing breeze.
Set upon four intricately pierced wheels, this nef reflects its historical role as a functional table ornament, once used to distribute dining essentials such as cutlery, napkins, and spices. By the 14th century, however, these vessels had become so elaborate that they transitioned into purely decorative objects, often positioned before the most distinguished guest to signify their elevated status.
This remarkable antique is fully hallmarked, featuring a ‘925’ stamp denoting sterling silver, the London import mark with a date code for 1923, and the maker’s mark ‘BM’ for Berthold Müller.
With its exceptional artistry and rich maritime symbolism, this magnificent piece is a prized addition to any collection. -
