Description
By: Donald McNarry, FRSA
Royal George
British Royal Yacht of 1817
Waterline model built in 1982 | Scale: 16’ = 1”
Glazed case with matching mahogany veneer trim: 15 1/2" L x 9 7/8" H x 7 1/4" W
This waterline model subtly portrays the 103’ three masted yacht with her sails luffing aback and simultaneously is hoisting her anchor cable in order to get underway. The various flags, Royal Standard and pennants, as well as its ornate polychrome or gilded decorative work that is applied to the hull adds to the impressive nature and luxurious appointments of this vessel. The use of thirteen large decorative windows along each side of the hull in place of gunports lends balance and coordination to the overall appearance. The color scheme encompasses the waterline gore of coppered sheathing, black topsides, ocher gunport strake with black exterior bulwarks and caprails, as well as mesh life rail netting. Her deck includes all her special layout with hatches, two decorative binnacles, windlass and gear, per known research. It has ornate square window wreath decorations, quarter gallery badges, as well as a decorative stern with Royal Coat of Arms, all of which are sculpted in relief and either gilded or polychrome in presentation. The model is ship rigged per merchantman practice of the era and shows some sails in a loose furl or set semi-back winding.
Illustrated in the McNarry book: Royal Yachts in Miniature, #13, 1995.
Model type: Extreme Miniature, Waterline
Scale: 1/16" = 1'
