A Gilded Age Conservatory Swan
-
Description
A majestic paddling swan with exquisitely carved features from spirited head, vigilant eyes and curved neck to webbed feet and showy tail. The raised wings with intricate profuse feather detail hide a flower well, a functional aspect of its former life as a conservatory ornament. Retains a marvelous weathered surface with traces of original gilt gesso. This majestic creature would have graced a gilded age conservatory, and is reminiscent of the 19th century swan boats that can still be found on the lake at Boston Common.
