Provenance:
Old US Collection
This monumental amphora is noteworthy not just for its impressive scale, but also for the beautiful and prized Egyptian granite (Lapis Pyrrhopoecilus) from which it was hewn. This “famous red granite…was obtained near Assouan [Aswan], or Ancient Syene, in upper Egypt, and was also prized by the Romans, who named the it Lapis Pyrrhopoecilus, meaning “a stone showing all the hues of fire.” The stone was used to make obelisks, as well as architecturally and commemoratively in the production of columns.
Given its large scale and exceptional coloration and grain structure, it is probable that the present amphora was carved from a pre-existing Roman column into its present form, as was customary in the neoclassical era. It employs not only the ancient material but also the traditional amphora form.
