'Involucro' Red Marble Sculpture by Andrea Grassi, Italy - 1970s

Created during the 1970s, this red marble sculpture is a compelling example of Andrea Grassi's mature abstract language. Composed of intersecting circular planes and deeply carved volumes, the work explores the relationship between mass, rhythm and negative space. Andrea Grassi (born 1938, Massa, Italy) trained in the renowned marble-working tradition of Carrara before developing an independent sculptural vocabulary that combined technical mastery with modern abstraction. During the late 1960s and 1970s he became recognised for a series of sculptures built from interlocking geometric forms, in which circular elements, flowing contours and carefully articulated volumes create compositions that continuously change when viewed from different perspectives. Executed with exceptional precision in richly coloured marble, this work reflects Grassi's enduring interest in the expressive possibilities of geometry and the timeless qualities of carved stone.
