Description
A pair of bookends, cast in silver-plated metal and designed as a tribute to the game of tennis. Each bookend takes the form of an arched, tombstone-shaped upright plate, against which a finely detailed tennis racquet is mounted at a dynamic diagonal angle — its strung head rendered in an openwork lattice pattern, the handle finished with a ribbed, wrapped-grip texture true to the sport's period equipment. A small spherical tennis ball rests at the base of each piece, completing the still-life composition.
The pair would have made a fitting decorative or presentation gift for a tennis enthusiast's library or study, characteristic of the sporting-themed objets de vertu popular in France at the time — depicting the game with both wit and craftsmanship.
Made in France. Circa: 1940. -
