Description
This is a highly evocative small finely cast bronze sculpture of a Mother and Child by the noted Mexican artist Jose Kuri-Brena (1914 - 2004). The sculpture tells the story of a young mother and newborn with the mother in the act of covering herself and the baby. It is a very intimate moment and pulls the viewer in emotionally. The figures have a rough almost brutalist quality to them, yet are well defined. The work is signed “JKB” and dated 1976.
*José Kuri-Breña (1913–2004) was an acclaimed Mexican sculptor and goldsmith from Zacatecas. Initially trained as a lawyer, he pursued his artistic passion at the Academia de San Carlos, creating works across various styles ranging from figurative to abstract. Known for utilizing diverse materials such as marble, jade, gold, and volcanic stone. He drew inspiration from the natural world, astronomy, and the human form. His works are displayed in several museum and private collections. -
