Item # 409DSZ16E  The present example is a bust taken from the life-size 1.8 meter high example of antiquity known as the Capitoline Antinous. It was recorded in Cardinal Albini's collection in 1733 and was noted in 1750 as being found in Hadrian's Villa. Together with numerous other objects from Albini's collection, the statue was displayed in the newly established Capitoline Museum. The statue likely held a caduceus in his hand and academics generally agree the statue represents Antinous in the guise of Hermes or Mercury. Always a cherished example of proper proportions and modeling of a handsome youth, the sculpture was copied extensively starting as early as 1741 when a marble version was made for the King of France. Versions were made in bronze and marble throughout the late eighteenth and 19th century. The present example is executed in a solid block of Carrara marble by the Italian sculptor Filli Pugi during the late 19th century. It is signed on the reverse of the socle "Filli Pugi Firenze". The statue was copied in both marble and bronze in the late 18th and 19th century as well as being reproduced in plaster by the well known 19th century copyist of antique pieces, Brucciani. Professionally cleaned. Minor chips and losses as well as trace discoloration to the surface in a few areas. A very fine presentation.
