Description
‘Echochamber’ by Carlo Lorenzetti, 2019
Turquoise and white milky glazed stoneware
A vessel that you sit against and talk into, either by yourself or with another person.
The term “echo chamber” is used most commonly today to described a closed off conceptual space where new ideas do not enter and an existing confirmation bias is reinforced. It is often used in reference to social media platforms where users choose to subscribe to outlets and content which fit with their beliefs, and willfully ignore ones that are apposed to or challenge them. While the thing I made does nothing to address the topic in regards to what happens on, for instance, Twitter, it does in a basic way force an individual to listen to someone else (whom may or may not be a stranger to that person in the public/exhibition context).
Alternate descriptions:
(1) A vessel that you sit against and talk into, either by yourself or with another person.
(2) The echo chamber, a large ceramic vessel, is a tool for closed loop communication for a lone person or pair of individuals. When two visitors enter, they can communicate without seeing each other as pipes connect the ear of one with the mouth of the other, and vice versa. All the pipes feed to the middle of the body where they reverberate and travel. A circle is created, a loop between what is said and heard. -
