Carved Hanging Wall Pocket

$ 1,150
  • Description
    American, ca. 1890-1910
    Appears to be walnut
    Over-all in great condition, retaining original varnish with some losses.
    Provenance: Thomas Rawson Antiques, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
    This unusual and probably unique carved wall pocket with a reticulated triangle-pattern back and canted front centered with a carved owl has wonderful symmetry to the network of patterns. The sides showing a cross suggest it may have been used in a place of worship, possibly to hold a hymn book or bible. In Christian art, owls have been linked to wisdom, often appearing alongside figures like St. Jerome who was known for his scholarly pursuits.
    15” h., 18” w., 5 ¼” d.
