Description
This finely carved French flour box dates from the early twentieth century and reflects the work of a highly skilled cabinetmaker-sculptor. Entirely hand-carved from solid wood, the vertical form is richly decorated with foliate motifs and a central carved figure, demonstrating a level of craftsmanship more commonly associated with master furniture rather than utilitarian objects. Originally designed for kitchen storage, the piece combines function with strong decorative presence. The tall, narrow proportions allow it to serve equally well today as a wall-mounted accent, sculptural decorative element, or collector’s object. The surface shows a warm, naturally aged patina consistent with its age, enhancing the depth of the carving without obscuring detail. Both rustic and refined, this flour box offers an authentic glimpse into early twentieth-century French provincial craftsmanship, where everyday objects were elevated through artistry and hand labor.
