1978 carved wood fertility sculpture by Edwin Scheier, Signed
Offered for sale is an untitled sculpture by the listed American artist Edwin Scheier (1910-2008) constructed of Guanacaste hardwood and cord. This tall, hand-carved sculpture is signed on the base and dated '78.
Edwin Scheier was an American artist, best known for his ceramic works with his wife, Mary Scheier. Edwin works in a number of mediums including sculpture, ceramics, painting, and drawing. The couple moved to Mexico to study Oaxacan Indian arts and crafts where their pottery and woodwork were heavily influenced by fertility symbols. This sculpture is part of a group of three (the other two are offered in separate listings) recently acquired from an important Rhode Island collection.
