Émile Louis Picault (1833-1915) was a prolific French sculpture who favored mythological and heroic figures starting with his first Salon show in 1863. This piece was part of a series titled "Le Travail" or Work and depicts a standing blacksmith with his tools including, anvil, forger, tongs and sledge-hammer.
