Description
Art Deco French Sculptor Phillippe Draped Woman for Ovington Shop New York
Item #3768
An Art Deco bronze sculpture ” Draped Woman” by French artist Emile Phillippe created especially for Ovington Brothers of New York in the late 1920s. A stunning female figure gracefully extends her arm to the heavens, holding aloft draped fabric. The piece is rendered in nickel silvered bronze along with cold painted detail of verdigris color on the draping. She stands on a unique three dimensional marble base topped with a nickel plate. It has an exceptional vertical design and stands 25″ tall with all the classic nuance of Art Deco glamour, showing a fascination with the female form.
This rare piece is signed in the lower part of the “fabric” by E. Phillippe. There is also the engraved stamp of the Ovington Brothers , the famous importers of china, tableware, ceramics and sculpture from European countries. The store was founded in 1843, and in 1909 continued and expanded as “Ovington’s” which also had a shop in Miami. Their beautiful pieces had an emphasis on decorative items and elegant gifts .
