Pair of French Art Deco Candlesticks by Puiforcat

Description
A fine pair of French Art Deco candlesticks by Puiforcat, Paris, combining silver plated with lacquered lapis lazuli. Each candlestick rises from a stepped, concentric silver base of banded, reeded rings — a hallmark of Puiforcat's geometric Art Deco vocabulary — to a tall cylindrical lapis lazuli shaft, lacquered to a deep glossy cobalt blue with fine natural pyrite-like flecking, protecting and enriching the stone's color. A silver mid-band and collar interrupt the shaft, and each terminates in a silver drip-pan and socket. The pairing of silver with lacquered lapis reflects Puiforcat's signature 1920s–30s use of hardstones and exotic materials — ivory, onyx, lapis, rosewood — set against the clean architectural silhouettes the house is known for.
Marked on the underside: PUIFORCAT FRANCE, with maker's punch. -
