English 19th Century Painted Firescreen

Sold Sold
  • Description
A beautifully painted English fireplace screen or guard, made there circa 1820. The curved design is intended to help keep coals, embers and sparks in the fireplace and clothing, pets and small children out. They are sometimes called nursery guards and allow all to enjoy the warmth of a wood burning fire from a safe distance. In warmer months, when the fireplace is not in use, a firescreen will add interest and obscure the empty fireplace from sight. This screen is painted white and has a decorative brass band that ornaments its top. Be sure to view all the images for a closer look at this wonderful antique.
