Fine Japanese Cast Iron Chagama Set for Tea Ceremoney

Description
A fine two-piece set of Japanese Chagama, a central piece used as a kettle to boil water for chanoyu (tea ceremony). The set consists of a Kama (water vessel) and Furo (the base for coals) made from textured cast irons, and both fitted with large loop handles hanging from lug handles in the form of Taotie beast. The lid was made from a patinated bronze and features a lovely red coral top knob that provides a striking visual contrast.
The Chagama, in classic proto form with elegant proportion, was made with refinement. It shows some old patina but no evidence of any recent use as a collectible item. It is dated to sometime of first half of 20th century (Showa period) and therefore a vintage piece. -
