French 20th Century Painted Grape-Picking Hod

Made in France around 1900, this grape-picking hod has later painted decoration. A hod of this type was a practical vessel used in the wine harvest to carry picked grapes, typically worn on the back, and surviving examples are now valued as decorative objects with strong rural character. The later paint decoration adds colour and interest to the original working form. The vessel's shaped body reflects its original purpose, designed to be carried during the grape harvest.
