Funny & Rare 19th C. Spanish Andújar "Grotesque Jar"

What a find! This extraordinary 19th-century ceramic vase was made in Spain's Andalusian province of Jaén, one of the country's oldest and most celebrated pottery centers. Collectors know these exuberantly decorated vessels as "grotesque jars" (botes grotescos), named for their richly layered ornament where nearly every inch of the surface is covered with flowers, foliage, and sculptural relief.

After Spain's victory over Napoleon's army at the Battle of Bailén in 1808, local potters replaced the birds traditionally found on these vessels with satirical French soldiers.
