A sculptural work in patinated steel and fused bronze from James Bearden’s celebrated Pod series. Elevated on a slender stem-form support, the spherical pod is composed of densely clustered organic elements radiating outward in all directions, creating a form that feels simultaneously botanical, geological, and architectural. The richly textured bronze surface, with areas of deep green and muted gilding, gives the work an excavated, almost archaeological presence.

The hinged pod opens to reveal an interior storage compartment and may also be removed from the stand and displayed independently. As with much of Bearden’s work, the sculpture balances monumentality with delicacy, combining industrial materials and fabrication techniques with highly tactile surfaces and naturalistic abstraction.

Bio:
James Bearden (American, b. 1964) is an abstract sculptor whose work explores the intersection of sculpture, architecture, and functional design. Working primarily in metal, Bearden has produced a number of ongoing series, including Cathedral, Assemblage, Voids, and Lunar Blooms. His work is held in corporate, municipal, and prominent private collections.
